Lawmakers, law enforcement and automakers are taking a close look at road safety and the number of accidents that are happening in Virginia. Since so many people are injured and lose their lives in crashes across the state – many of which are believed to be preventable – this is a major problem that needs to be addressed.
Recently, Danville has moved forward with a safety campaign. However, even the most vigilant initiatives will not prevent all accidents. When people are injured or lose a loved one in a collision, they should be cognizant of the options available to make a full recovery.
Safe Streets and Roads for All focuses on road issues in Danville
The most recent comprehensive statistics for Danville are from 2018 through 2023. During that time, there were five fatalities. Twenty people suffered serious injuries. Researchers looked at the numbers, the circumstances and sought input from residents to determine specific areas that were the riskiest.
The U.S. Department of Transportation provided Danville with the funds to initiate Safe Streets and Roads for All. It covers all types of accidents and how to prevent them, but it particularly concentrates on pedestrians.
Common complaints were the absence of crosswalks and sidewalks. Speeding was referenced as a major challenge. Some of the strategies that the Danville Metropolitan Planning Organization will use include adding crosswalks, improving them and reducing the number of speeding vehicles.
Initiatives aside, drivers will continue to drive at excessive speeds, get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or using drugs, drive while drowsy, or behave in a generally reckless manner. The most vulnerable people on the road are bicyclists and pedestrians. When they are hit, they can face far more severe injuries than those who are in a vehicle of their own. While these steps can be effective to potentially reducing the number of accidents, many will not be prevented. It is wise to know what to do in the aftermath.
Those injured in an auto crash should understand their rights
Any type of auto accident can lead to catastrophic injuries and death. Even those who have minor injuries might need medical care, lose time on the job and face future obstacles. Looking into the details of the accident is crucial to determine a path forward. It is fundamental with making a physical and financial recovery. Having guidance from the start can be essential to a successful claim.
